SITA North is a subsidiary of Suez Environnement. It has 1,000 employees and its headquarters is in Valenciennes, France(59). Having ownership of important waste storage sites, it extends its expertise to the preservation of biodiversity on sensitive sites.
-Anticipate the natural recolonization of sites in the long term by promoting noticeable or banal biodiversity on natural areas or redeveloped existing sites
The land area is larger than the operation area for the Installations for Non-Hazardous Waste Storage (ISDND). At the end of the operation area, the area is redeveloped for animals and plants away from human activity. Therefore, some of these sites contain a biodiversity reserve to be protected.
Since 2005, SITA has decided to go beyond its statutory obligations for the protection of biodiversity whether it is banal or noticeable. Set specifications make for a standard of quality, flora fauna studies are done prior to the delegation of management to a specialized body.
For example, as part of its continued work in Lewarde, France (59), SITA Nord carried out an ecological impact study of the facility which revealed a wetland where frogs and newt were threatened. To preserve this biodiversity, SITA North set up an area of 7.5 hectares of recreated natural habitats and ecosystems. In accordance with the DREAL (Regional Directorate of Environment, Development and Housing) and after approval by the prefecture, a relocation of the species was made.
SITA Nord, through management agreement, provides for the Community of Municipalities of le Coeur d’Ostrevent (CCCO) the path that borders the new natural site to ensure continuity of the "Galibots Loop" hiking trail. In return, the Coeur d'Ostrevent ensures the proper maintenance of the road and the environmental management of the countryside. The new zone is integrated into the territorial green belt of le Coeur d’Ostrevent and is becoming a better hiking area through the integration of the site in its environment.
Another example of the ISDND is in Dannes, France (62): SITA Nord acquired a natural area of 13 hectares adjoining "le Coteau du Fond de Barges," and entrusts the management to the Nord-Pas-de-Calais conservatory of natural spaces. The Coteau du Fond des Barges covers calcareous grasslands, remarkable endangered habitat in Europe and military tunnels which act as shelters for bats.
