CGI – SOCIETE GENERALE GROUP mobilizes its employees onto eco-friendly transport

4. Environment

Sustainable mobility

Context

CGI, a financial institution set up in 1951, is a leader in Motor and Boat financing as well as Debt Refinancing. The company has 800 staff in Europe and 17 branches in France. The challenges of its CSR approach are the same as those of its sales strategy: ensuring the business is sustainable while having an effect on its clients, its employees and society.

In 2011, CGI became the first French company to be assessed for ISO 26000 and achieved the "progression" level.

Objectives

  • Fostering the wellbeing of employees at work.
  • Reducing emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GG).

APPROACH

Thanks to substantial financial resources (budgets dedicated to CSR projects) and human resources (strategy supported by the Innov’Acteurs network), CGI can put in place measures to reduce its environmental impact.

Since most CO2 emissions come from transport, CGI decided to renew its fleet of cars, taking account of the consumption and emission of CO2. A monthly survey of fuel consumption was initiated and "bad" drivers were educated about eco-friendly driving.

At head office, 2 electric vehicles were made available to employees for business trips, along with a fleet of Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPC).

In order to get a better idea of GG emissions and reduce them, a GG Assessment was set up using data from 2014, led by the Sustainable Development Department of the Société Générale Group. This showed emissions of 1,245 metric tons of CO2 or 1.6 metric tons of CO2 per occupant.
