Context

Founded in 1871, Schneider Electric SA is a European industrial group of international dimension that makes and markets products for the management of electricity and automation systems, and solutions adapted to these sectors. A major player in automation systems for buildings and in energy savings, Schneider seeks to optimize energy consumption and the choice of energy solutions for its new headquarters and make it comfortable for its clients.

The HIVE (Hall d'Innovation et Vitrine d'Energies), the new headquarters of Schneider Electric located in Rueil Malmaison, opened its doors in November 2008.

Objectives

  •  Make the HIVE a showcase for Schneider Electric solutions
  •  Raise awareness among occupants about energy consumption thanks to the "dynamic display" interface
  •  Contribute and engage in dialog with the ecosystem in order to become a "living" resource in interaction with the elements of a smart city: renewable energy, green mobility, smart grid

APPROACH

The HIVE, which welcomes 15,000 visitors per year and hosts 1,850 employees (previously spread out over six sites in Ile-de-France), has a surface area of 35,000 m² over seven levels.

To attain energy-efficiency objectives, Schneider Electric offers a series of technical solutions and services based on recognized expertise in all the technical aspects of the building. Its new headquarters, the Hive, provides an opportunity to put these technologies into practice:

  •  The technical management of the building handles the functions dedicated to the comfort of occupants, such as time-based lighting, heating and air-conditioning.
  •  The building benefits from DALI lighting, a smart system to control lighting that allows the programming of scenarios according to different parameters (presence of employees, hours, etc.)
  •  An integrated system manages individuals’ commands for lighting, curtains, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning.

The building was designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte and built in co-production by the teams of BNP Paribas Immobilier, Promotion Immobilier d’Entreprise and Bouygues Immobilier. Le Mondiale, owner of the building, actively supported this project.

CONTRIBUTION TO COMPANY PERFORMANCE

  •  The average consumption per m2 and per year for the building went from 150kWh in 2009 to 110kWh in 2010 then 78kWh in 2012, or a reduction of 47% more than the 2020 objectives in the Building Plan.

Benefits

  •  30 hectares of forest saved.
  •  The building also obtained the certifications ISO 14001, HQE Exploitation, 1st building in the world rated ISO 50001, 1st building certified BREAAM in-Use "exceptional" (6 stars)
  •  Schneider Electric’s new headquarters is the first building in France to obtain the certification NF IN 16 001.
